La saga des intellectuels français
t.1, A l'épreuve de l'histoire (1944-1968) ; t. 2, L'avenir en miettes (1968-1989)
A systematic and sweeping account of the adventurous history of creative French intellectuals, from the Liberation to the bicentenary of the Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The first volume, 1944-1968, covers the Sartre and Beauvoir years and their debates, their contrasting relationship to communism, the shock of 1956, the Algerian war, the beginnings of third-world consciousness, the sudden rise of Gaullism and their challenge to it: a time dominated by a questioning of traditional history, the influence of communism and the progressive disillusionment which followed. The second volume, 1968-1989, continues with the leftist utopian vision, Solzhenitsyn and the battle against totalitarianism, to the « new philosophy », the rise of environmental awareness, and the disorientation of the 80’s : a time marked by the crisis of the future of history and the established dominance of the social sciences.

How did the left let itself be reduced to an impotent realism or posturing radicalism to the point of allowing republican sovereignty and nationalist populism to dominate public opinion? Pierre Rosanvallon confronts these questions here in a twofold response: in his role as an historian of ideas and political philosophy as well as an actor and witness of the times.

l'enseignement du fait colonial en France des années 1980 à nos jours
Laurence de Cock

Drawing from the archives of the Education ministry, but also from official documents and school textbooks, Laurence De Cock traces the debates which have broken out over the teaching of colonial history since the 1980’s. Through analysis of the writing of history curricula, she questions the influence of public debate on their production and shows how the colonial past, as it has been increasingly politicized, has deeply shaken the scholarly understanding of that history.
